Sonic Youth

                                      
Influenciado pela música experimental, bem como para bandas e artistas experimentaram com o ruído, o Sonic Youth se tornou conhecido por usar afinações de guitarra incomum, o uso pesado de distorção e feedback e abuso de suas guitarras, que têm desempenhado com chaves de fenda da bateria e varas que não calibrada e, especialmente, para alcançar os sons que você deseja.
Formada em 1981 por Thurston Moore na guitarra e vocais, Kim Gordon no baixo, teclados e Anna DeMarinis Richard Edson na bateria. DeMarinis deixou rapidamente de ser parte da banda e se juntou Lee Ranaldo, que permanece até hoje no grupo.
Existem várias versões sobre as razões para o nome da banda. Uma delas é que o nome é uma combinação dos nomes de Fred "Sonic" Smith da banda MC5 Detroit do músico reggae e Big Youth. Outra versão diz que surgiu como uma paródia das muitas bandas com a palavra "juventude" em seus nomes na cena de Nova York no início dos anos 80. Esta versão seria apoiado por uma versão do cartaz do primeiro show da banda que contou com o nome de "Juventude Fodendo".
